What’s happening? On February 7, 2023, the government of Canada announced the annual federal minimum wage adjustment will increase the general minimum wage rate $1.10 per hour, raising it to $16.65. The increase will come into effect on April 1, 2023. If the province or territory where the employee is usually employed has a higher minimum wage, then the employee shall be paid the higher minimum wage rate.
What should we do? The general minimum wage increase applies to most employees in the federal sector. Employers should review provincial minimum wage rates and compare them with their employees’ wages. Employers must monitor local laws to ensure minimum wage requirements are being met.
